How to become happier

When we go through storms and difficult seasons in our lives and when things go wrong, it’s so easy to drown in it. 

But, regardless of how hard things are right now and how overwhelming everything feels, you should not let this stop you from taking control of your lives and from being happy.

Fixating on worries and problems, will only paralyze you and keep you from living your life.

You can choose to be happy, you can be happy. So why not start that change now, so you can kick off the new year with a fresh mindset and make a change?

Habits are formed by doing small steps consistently. So, I prepared a little happiness challenge for you to reframe your mind, allowing you to improve by taking small and easy steps every day.

It is only one task every day, no need to feel overwhelmed, and no excuses to not be consistent with it.

31 Steps to Overcome Unhappiness

Day 1: Breathe mindfully — while sitting or standing, focus all your attention on your breathing. Your inhale. And your exhale. Do this for 10 mins.

Day 2: Switch from soda to water and drink 8 glasses of water a day.

Day 3: Spend time with people you love without distraction (no phones, TVs or other devices)

Day 4: Treat yourself — Anything that’ll make you happy. It doesn’t have to be extravagant.

Day 5: Don’t check any social media today, instead do something you love.

Day 6: Celebrate your wins — before going to bed, list 5 things that you’ve accomplished today.

Day 7: Go outside (maybe with a hot cocoa and a blanket if needed) and watch the sunset.

Day 8: Hug someone you love tight and tell them how grateful you are for them.

Day 9: Watch an uplifting movie or if you prefer books choose one that makes you laugh and smile while you read.

Day 10: Practice self-care — you don’t have to spend money to do this. You can take a long bath or basically anything that relaxes you and makes you happy.

Day 11: Buy yourself flowers and put them in some place you can see them throughout the day.

Day 12: Compliment yourself — before you end your day, list 5 things you love about yourself.

Day 13: Learn something new or finally do that one thing that you’ve been putting off for a while (A language, preparing a certain dish, enrolling in a course DIY project, to give you some inspiration).

Day 14: Go outside, either walking a bit or sitting down, and take in your surroundings mindfully.

Day 15: Take a break — don’t be afraid to take a break and just do nothing.

Day 16: Write about your day — focus on the things that made you smile. The things that you are grateful for. Anything that made you happy.

Day 17: Give a genuine compliment to someone.

Day 18: Get up early and watch the sunrise.

Day 19: Take a trip — it doesn’t have to be far. It can be to the park or even to the mall.

Day 20: Start your day with positive affirmations for self love – I am worthy of love and happiness. I am enough. I love and accept myself for who I am.

Day 21: Let go of perfectionism and do something creative just for the fun of doing it.

Day 22: Do something kind for a stranger.

Day 23: Before going to bed, list 5 things that you are grateful for today.

Day 24: Prepare your favorite food for yourself (from scratch if possible).

Day 25: Spend a whole day without complaining, whenever you catch yourself, make up a funny situation in your head and smile instead

Day 26: Exercise – you don’t have to go to the gym or hit the treadmill, a nice long walk will do.

Day 27: Get up early and watch the sunrise.

Day 28: Have a mindful breakfast – no cellphones, no distractions. When eating, eat slowly and mindfully and just be present.

Day 29: Clean and organize one room in your house.

Day 30: Meditate – it can change your life! It will help you take control of your emotions and thoughts. Do this for 15-20 mins. You can find a lot of guided meditations on YouTube or you can simply meditate in silence.

Day 31: Let go of comparisons, and enjoy what you have, and who you are.
